UNTITLED [2020]
The painting shows six luminous people on their way to a new image, a new history, a new time. Behind them lie centuries in which mainly female socialized people [hereafter referred to as women] were extensively viewed, virtuously portrayed and aptly titled. Women who are saved. Women wearing pearl earrings. Women fighting with other women over men. Women who tactfully walk away. Women who smile sheepishly. Women who rest unhappily. Women whose heads didn't make it into the picture. Women who lie on radiator hoods. We know them all. We have seen them all. Together with six young women from Basel, the collective Henrike Iglesias questions in this piece development the emancipatory, empowering, politicizing potential of self-portraits and narratives on- and offline: What versions of ourselves do we want to share? How and with what do we fill spaces? How do we describe the world? What do we want from it? Who hears us, who follows us, who connects with us? And how do we start a revolution together?

HENRIKE IGLESIAS is a theater collective based in Berlin and Basel and was founded in 2012 by Anna Fries, Laura Naumann, Marielle Schavan and Sophia Schroth. In the meantime, Eva G. Alonso and Malu Peeters are also part of the crew. They all fell in love with each other in the sports high school. Their theatrical scope ranges from the popular to the personal to the political. They understand pop cultural and mass media phenomena as a reflection of social conditions and grievances and have made it their mission to illuminate them from feminist perspectives. They like to appear as Feminist Killjoys, DJ Henrike Iglesias and as internet users.
The performances GRRRRRL (2016), an investigation of the attribution of 'evil' in relation to women, and OH MY (2018), a live feminist porn, were both created at ROXY Birsfelden. Until 2020, Henrike Iglesias is in a double pass partner*ship with the Münchner Kammerspiele and the jungen theater basel, where FRESSEN (2019) was created.
UNTITLED [2020] is a production by Henrike Iglesias in co-production with the jungen theater basel and the Münchner Kammerspiele, supported by the Fonds Doppelpass of the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
Media excerpts
A young, dynamic production - finds the Basler Zeitung
One of the strengths of the play, in which Henrike Iglesias and the ensemble trace the emancipatory and politicizing potential of the most diverse self-images, is the interplay of deep seriousness in the subject matter with the action scenes customary to JTB and a good dose of situation comedy. ... a luminous piece about self-images and world-images and the delightful phenomenon of changeability. Badische Newspaper
World-saving thoughts become intimate life stories and vice versa, the private becomes political. And on top of that it has to be said that the protagonists all play simply unbelievably well. BZ
INTRIGE the magazine for young theater finds: If I were you, I would go as soon as possible. Grab a beer at the bar (or an apple spritzer, whichever you prefer), let the six wonderful women cast their spell over you and enjoy yourself. It's worth it. It really is.
