This year’s theme for the B-Side discussion series, curated by Johny Pitts, isRoots/Routes: How can independence be preserved in a world shaped by technological hegemony and mainstream monopolies? The focus is on dub culture, an experimental practice that creates alternative versions of the official narrative.
To kick things off, Pitts will speak with the «Godfather of Dub Poetry», Linton Kwesi Johnson. Johnson has been active as a poet, musician, and activist for over half a century. Together, the two will discuss the origins of dub, Johnson’s interdisciplinary body of work, his independence, and the question of how creative integrity can be preserved over decades. A rare opportunity to experience one of the most significant living poets in Basel.

The British author and photographer Johny Pitts received multiple awards for his acclaimed essay Afropean (2019). In it, he exploresBlack Europewith words and photographs through a travelogue format, highlighting the significance of ”Afropean“ culture. Out of his journey emerged a wider theoretical framework he callsthe B-Side, which examines creative expressions that circumnavigate the mainstream, often emerging within subcultures. In a world of algorithms and tech monopolies, his goal is to bring art and artists from the margins to the forefront, making visible those who are often overlooked – much like the B-side of hit singles on vinyl records. As part of BuchBasel, Johny Pitts will curate and moderate a series of discussions centred around this B-Side theme.
