Rümelinsplatz
On the wall at the junction of Gerbergässlein and Rümelinsplatz, two lifelike figures have been cause for irritation followed by beaming smiles since September 2023. The installation called “The Ledge” was designed by American artist Mark Jenkins and developed on the initiative of the Basel art platform Artstübli.
Beschreibung
Both men are dressed in beige trousers and grey hoodies. The hoods reach over their faces, covering them completely. One man stands on a support beam, while the other grabs on to it and dangles above the dangerous drop. The upper figure seems to be offering his companion a hand to prevent him from falling, but he’s standing on his hands! This supposed act of assistance has turned into a kind of devious attack... or maybe just an act of clumsiness.
Mark Jenkins is internationally renowned as a street artist and has attracted considerable attention with his works located in public spaces in his home town of Washington D.C., as well as in Montreal, Rio de Janeiro, London, Rome and Barcelona, among others. As is common with his works, the installation in Basel was not announced in advance, thereby giving the locals quite the shock.
