Stadtmusik Basel
With its versatile repertoire, Stadtmusik Basel is a good example of how wind music can sound in the 21st century.
The Stadtmusik Basel was founded in Basel in 1872, originally under the name Basler Musikverein, and is a long-established association which currently performs as a symphonic wind orchestra. In accordance with the grading criteria of the Swiss Wind Music Association, Stadtmusik Basel is classified as a first-class wind band. Currently, around 50 active amateur musicians are involved in the association, which is managed by a four-member executive committee and a music committee of the same size. Marco Nussbaumer has been the orchestra’s conductor since 2024. In addition to the challenging concert programmes, which Stadtmusik Basel presents to an interested audience twice a year, the orchestra also performs in public spaces throughout the year, much to the delight of passers-by. Participation in cantonal and national music competitions is also part of the association’s programme. Alongside its musical ambitions, the Basel City Band also promotes social interaction amongst a diverse range of members.
