Burg Reichenstein
Clearly visible between the trees on the route from Birstal, Burg Reichenstein is a castle situated above Arlesheim. Offering an unparalleled view of the tri-border area, it is a wonderful place to spend time.
Beschreibung
Burg Reichenstein was part of a larger fortification that originally comprised four castles. The two middle castles are no longer in existence, whereas the lower castle has been largely well preserved and is now known as Schloss Birseck.
After suffering severe damage in the Basel earthquake of 1356, the castle was repaired by the owner family. The castle buildings then collapsed completely in the 17th century. In 1932, the ruin was acquired by Dr J. Brodbeck-Sandreuter, who commissioned Basel architect and castle restorer Eugen Probst to come up with a plan for the rebuild. In what was a time of recession, unemployed people from the region rebuilt the castle within a year. The painting of the castle interior is the work of two artists: Niklaus Stöcklin from Basel and Otto Plattner from Liestal. Owned by the Burg Reichenstein Foundation since 1972, the castle is a protected monument and a cultural property of national importance.
