The castle of Bürgeln, a manor house in Germany's Markgräflerland, is well worth a visit. Begun in 1762 and completed two years later, it is now a popular venue for seminars and other events.
This early Classic-period house with playful Rococo features is perched high above the vineyards of the Markgräflerland amid cherry orchards, fields and woods. It is well hidden, though: you hardly get a glimpse of it until you are virtually on the doorstep. And an insider tip once you're there: walk a little way uphill from the visitors' car park, and a magnificent view of the three-country region will open up before you.
