Basel is lucky to have nice neighbours - not only because of the feeling of affinity that crosses international borders, but also because of the beautiful countryside and delicious culinary culture surrounding the city. But you do not have to leave Basel to discover exciting excursion destinations.

 

The views from the top of the Jura mountains, the Black Forest or the Vosges mountains - just a taste of what the Basel region has to offer. A short trip into the countryside will reveal a picturesque landscape rich in diversity.
The neighbouring cantons of Basel-Country and Solothurn, the Alsace and the Black Forest together form a vast recreational area with a wide variety of leisure activities to relax and enjoy or thrill and excite, as you wish.
However, you don't have to go too far if you don't want to - the city itself has many green parks and lots of excursion destinations of its own to offer.

  • Zoological Gardens

    The Zoological Gardens, affectionately termed “Zolli” by Basel's inhabitants, were opened in 1874. You will feel welcome and amazed in equal measure when you visit our eleven hectares of gardens with around 600 different species of animal from all corners of the globe.

  • Augusta Raurica

    Visit the ancient Romans. In the modern-day suburb of Augst on the edge of Basel you will discover around 20 fascinating ancient sights, including the best-preserved ancient theatre complex north of the Alps, a reconstructed Roman villa and a Roman domesticated animal park.

  • The Black Forest

    When in Basel, you should not miss the opportunity of visiting the Black Forest. In winter you can ski here, in summer take some time to relax on the shores of Titisee lake.

  • Alsace

    With its many culinary delights, Alsace has much to offer. Sample the excellent wines of the popular and pretty village of Eugisheim or take a trip to Colmar, capital of the Alsace wine-growing region.

  • Wasserfallen

    Discover one of the most beautiful excursion destinations in the region - Wasserfallen near Reigoldswil. Take the cable car to the mountain summit and then take an exhilarating scooter ride back down into the valley.
