Guided architecture tour - the changing face of Dreispitz

Modern architecture

Description

One of the most interesting topics in modern urban design is without a doubt the spatial planning of urban districts. Basel is noted for its modern architecture and boasts impressive examples of how industrial sites can be developed into vibrant districts. For instance, the Dreispitz district where the city's bonded warehouse was formerly located is now home to a number of buildings by renowned architects. Design, art and creativity are tangible here.

Listen to explanations of the background to this transformation on a walking tour and view some impressive buildings up close. The imposing Academy of Art and Design is the first you'll notice, designed by Basel-based architects Morger + Dettli. Right next to it is the House of Electronic Arts and the impressive Oslo Nord building by ffbk Architekten - an angular structure that houses recording studios, the ffbk architects' firm and an event venue, among others. Design, art and creativity are tangible here. More and more housing and lifestyle space is being created in the Dreispitz district. For example, Herzog & de Meuron plan to build the three tallest residential towers in Switzerland in the "Nordspitze" - the northernmost tip of this area.
