The play 'King Teiresias' will be staged by director Leonie Böhm at Theater Basel in the 21/22 season. Freely adapted from Sophocles' 'King Oedipus'.
Ancient tragedy transmixed
Whoever slays snakes during sex turns from a man into a woman - and vice versa. This is how the myth tells it. The seer Teiresias therefore knows both sexes, his horizon of experience is superhuman. Through him, Oedipus understands that he is his father's murderer and his mother's lover. In Sophocles' 'Oedipus the King' he has a supporting role. Director Leonie Böhm puts Teiresias in the spotlight - the figure of the knower who would rather not know. Would he be the better king? Known for her trenchant adaptations of classics, she was invited to the Theatertreffen in 2020 with 'Medea*'.
