Event highlights for 2022
Basel Carnival (7 to 9 March 2022)
Basel’s famous Carnival will take place with the Morgenstreich, the lantern exhibition on Münsterplatz, the Kids’ Carnival, Guggenmusik and Schnitzelbängg. The only thing we’ll have to do without is the cortège, the big procession.
Architekturwoche Basel (9 to 15 May 2022)
The biennial Architekturwoche Basel (AWB) will take place for the first time this year under the title “Reale Räume” (Real Spaces). Over 100 lectures, guided tours, workshops, exhibitions, films, concerts and performances will be open to the general public.
Basel Museums Night (20 May 2022)
37 museums and cultural institutions will open their doors at an unusual time and offer their guests the opportunity to wander through their collections from 6.00 pm to 2.00 am.
Young Stage Basel (20 to 24 May 2022)
One of the world’s most important circus festivals, Young Stage provides young professional artists with a platform to showcase their talent and to compete with others.
Fantasy Basel (26 to 28 May 2022)
For three whole days, creative-minded people can let their fantasy run wild and meet others who share their fascination with science fiction, cinema, game design and fantasy in an area of over 60,000 m2.
Mondrian (5 June to 9 October 2022)
As one of the most important artists of the avant-garde movement, Mondrian shaped the evolution of painting from figuration to abstraction. His early work was influenced not only by late 19th century Dutch landscape painting but also by Symbolism and Cubism.
Picasso – El Greco (11 June to 25 September 2022)
In a large special exhibition, the Kunstmuseum illuminates the encounter of Pablo Picasso with the old master El Greco, born Doménikos Theotokópoulos in Crete. Masterworks by both artists are juxtaposed in some 40 pairings, tracing the course of one of the most fascinating dialogues in the history of art.
Art Basel (16 to 19 June 2022)
The Art Basel, exhibiting art of the 20th and 21st centuries, is indisputably the world’s leading fair in the international art market. Around 250 selected galleries from around the world present modern and contemporary works of high quality, making the fair the most important temporary museum.
Basel Tattoo (15 to 23 July 2022)
Against the historical backdrop of Kaserne Basel, the Basel Tattoo – the world’s second-largest tattoo – is held each summer. Look forward to a sensational show with the sounds of bagpipes, wind-instrument music and folk dances.
Floss Festival (10 to 27 August 2022)
The free summer event brings a Mediterranean festival mood to Basel. Performing on a floating stage on the Rhine with a sail-shaped canopy, insider tips and well-known bands from Switzerland and abroad will delight up to 50,000 visitors. Take a seat on the steps of the Kleinbasel river bank and enjoy this special atmosphere.
Erasmus klingt! (12 to 18 September 2022)
This year, Basel’s historic Old Town will be the setting for the first interdisciplinary festival “Erasmus klingt!”. The epochal figure of Erasmus of Rotterdam, who worked in Basel for many years, will be at the centre of a new baroque festival that will henceforth take place as a biennial in view of Erasmus’ 500th death anniversary in 2036.
Flâneur Festival (8 to 17 September 2022)
Experience the diversity, indulge in curiosity and enjoy the magic – that is the motto of the Flâneur Festival 2022. Around 70 vendors will offer their products along Clarastrasse, which is closed to traffic, and invite locals and guests to enjoy a stroll.
Genusswoche Basel (15 to 25 September 2022)
Basel is Switzerland’s GenussStadt 2022. Discover a panoply of culinary delights with a focus on regionality, seasonality and craftsmanship, for example during the Genusswoche, which has become Switzerland’s biggest gourmet event.
Baloise Session (27 October to 11 November 2022)
Since 1986, the Baloise Session has showcased some of the most famous artists from the international music scene. The festival takes place in small locations with an intimate nightclub atmosphere.
Swiss Indoors Basel (22 to 30 October 2022)
One of the world’s most important indoor tennis tournaments, Swiss Indoors Basel is undoubtedly the most significant tennis event in the Swiss sporting calendar.
Basel Autumn Fair (29 October to 13 November 2022)
The Basel Autumn Fair is a unique experience for young and old alike. The many rides, the culinary variety and colourful market on Petersplatz have something to offer each and every visitor.
Christmas market in Basel (24 November to 23 December 2022)
The Basel Christmas market at Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz is considered to be one of the prettiest and largest in Switzerland. In the middle of the city centre, nestled in the historic Old Town, traders and artisans offer their goods for sale in 130 small, rustic wooden chalets.
