The best way to enjoy Basel's architectural gems is on foot. Here are some ideas for your own individual architectural walking tour.

Guided tours of the Novartis Campus

Experience several highlights of modern architecture during a visit to the Novartis headquarters in the St. Johann district. Since 2002, Novartis has been creating a site on the former industrial complex on the Rhine that combines spectacular office and research buildings by famous architects in a green campus environment. A guided tour of the campus will take in a range of buildings designed by Frank O. Gehry, Tadao Ando, SANAA, David Chipperfield and Diener & Diener.

The tours are held every other Saturday, and a reservation is required.

“24 Stops” on the Rehberger Trail

The Rehberger Trail, which is around 5 km long, links two countries, two towns, two cultural institutions and 24 works of art. The trail crosses the border from Riehen to Weil am Rhein, leading from the Fondation Beyeler to the Vitra Campus. Guided by the “24 Stops” – 24 milestones created by the artist Tobias Rehberger – visitors can enjoy fascinating insights into the surrounding area on a stroll through delightful countryside bearing the imprint of human activities.

The appeal of Vitra Design

Visitors to the production site of the furniture manufacturer Vitra can look forward to a unique composition of contemporary architecture. In Weil am Rhein, just a few minutes away from the Swiss border, Vitra has created a Mecca for design lovers that reflects both the commercial side of the furniture brand and its cultural commitment. While part of the campus is devoted to producing home and office furniture, visitors can also enjoy a diverse range of exhibitions, events and workshops.

S AM Swiss Architecture Museum

The S AM is Switzerland's leading institution for providing information about contemporary architecture. Centrally located and close to other cultural institutions, the Swiss Architecture Museum is a perfect place to stop on your tour of the city. It’s no coincidence that it is located in Basel, which has evolved into Switzerland's cultural and architectural hotspot.
