Experience the “three best days” in Basel. During Basel’s Carnival (Fasnacht), the city goes wild for three days. On the Monday after Ash Wednesday all the lights in the city centre go out at 4 a.m. sharp, for the “Morgestraich”, showing off the 200 or so artistically decorated lanterns. Countless drummers and piccolo players strike up the same march at exactly 4 a.m. – a magical moment. For 72 hours around 20,000 active Carnival participants stroll through Basel's Old Town while playing music, accompanied by these wonderful lanterns. Anyone who wants to get to know Basel shouldn’t miss Fasnacht. With the Morgestraich, the procession (Cortège), children's Fasnacht and the Guggenkonzert (Gugge music concert), there’s plenty on offer.

Experience Basel's Carnival up close for four days and three nights with our “Fasnacht in Basel” package. The offer includes three overnight stays, a Fasnacht walking tour on Sunday evening before Morgestraich, the official Fasnacht guide “Rädäbäng” and the obligatory Fasnacht badge (“Blaggedde”) in copper, silver or gold. But what makes Basel Fasnacht so special is its blend of anarchical chaos and well organized large-scale event. Succumb to Fasnacht fever!
