A new district is being created in the north of Basel. Designed according to sustainable development principles, it offers a mix of residential accommodation, open and green spaces, offices and commercial premises, a school, a retirement home and some culinary surprises. On a tour for all the senses - sight, hearing, smell and touch - you can discover how new living space is being created on the spacious site of the former Deutsche Bahn freight yard.
Since 2007, several high-rise buildings have been constructed to frame the site, with more new-builds to follow. The buildings have been planned and constructed in a resource-efficient way, and will also be operated and maintained like this. Social aspects have also been taken into account in the development. The central spatial planning element of the site is the Erlenmattpark, which covers approximately 50,000 m2 and is enclosed by the buildings. Find out all about the detailed design of this planned green space. It has the potential to become the shared centre of this new district full of contrasts. At the same time it will serve as a green corridor providing direct access to the Lange Erlen recreational area.
