The area surrounding the Swiss SBB railway station features an impressive variety of architecture by some of the leading architects of our era. Numerous fascinating structures by contemporary star architects give this district its urban vibrancy. Highlights include the Central Signal Box, the Elsässertor and the Meret Oppenheim high-rise building by Herzog & de Meuron, modern residential and commercial buildings by Diener & Diener Architekten and the Markthalle with its impressive domed roof, erected in 1929.
