Winter in Basel

When it turns cold outside, Basel turns peaceful and tranquil. Let yourself be enchanted by the kind of unique atmosphere you can only experience on a winter’s walk.

During the cold winter months, visitors to our city are drawn in even greater numbers to the high-calibre exhibitions in Basel’s museums. A time to spend hours indoors, reflecting and absorbing past eras and their many thousand stories presented in visual form. A wide variety of musical and theatre performances – from intimate to large-scale – delight audiences. Outside, visitors can stroll round Basel’s Christmas market, meet up with friends and enjoy hot food and beverages. A fondue here, a mulled wine there. This is Basel in winter.

After Christmas and New Year, the final preparations get underway for the “three best days of the year”: Basel’s Carnival – Fasnacht – is just around the corner. The highly creative large-scale event is part of UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage, and the city is understandably proud of it.
