Kunstmuseum Basel


Starting in 2016, the Kunstmuseum Basel presents art in three different buildings: The Kunstmuseum Basel | Main Building, the Kunstmuseum Basel | New Building and the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart, which is dedicated to contemporary art. Across Dufourstrasse, facing the Main Building and connected to it on the basement level, an exhibition building designed by the renowned Basel-based architecture firm Christ & Gantenbein rised that accommodates special exhibitions as well as presentations of art from the collections. 

The Kunstmuseum Basel ranks among the most renowned institutions of its kind in Europe and beyond. Its world-famous collection, the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel, now encompasses around 4.000 paintings, sculptures, installations, and videos as well as 300.000 drawings and prints from seven centuries.

Kunstmuseum Basel | main building

The main building of Kunstmuseum Basel, dating from 1936, was designed by Basel-based architect Rudolf Christ together with master builder Paul Bonatz from Stuttgart, both advocates of conservative modernism.


Kunstmuseum Basel | new building

The new extension located opposite the main building and joined to it by an underground walkway is a top-quality exhibition venue for contemporary art presentation and a further architectural highlight in the City of Basel.


Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart

Kunstmuseum Basel | Contemporary is a joint undertaking by the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation, the Christoph Merian Foundation and the Canton of Basel-Stadt.


Kupferstichkabinett und Bibliothek (Kunstmuseum)

With 60,000 drawings and watercolours, 250,000 prints and engravings, the Kupferstichkabinett of the Kunstmuseum Basel is not only the biggest in Switzerland, but also houses one of the world's most important collections of its kind.
