In 1589 the botanical gardenwas established as a university arrangement on the Rhine terraces next to the former university building at the Rhine leap. The garden was transferred several times, would sew recovered its final location in that until it 1898 the Spalentors. The botanical garden of the University of Basel is the oldest in the German language area.
