On the one hand Basel has an historical centre that grew up organically, with mediaeval and baroque buildings such as the cathedral and a number of former monastery and convent churches, three city gates, the city hall and the houses of patrician families and guilds. On the other hand it is a modern city that bears the mark of contemporary Swiss and foreign architects.

In recent years, Basel has acquired the reputation of being a city of special architectural distinction. Time and again, as one strolls through Basel, one comes across exciting examples of contemporary architecture. Little wonder, then, that Switzerland’s Architectural Museum is in Basel.
