The Theater Basel has a mixed programme of dance, music and theatre encompassing classics, traditional works, contemporary dramas and modern musical theatre. Premières of new works and first performances of works in German contribute to a varied and exciting programme of events. The Theater Basel is also highly committed to the development and encouragement of the next generation and promotes experimental projects in all branches of the performing arts.
The Baseldytschi Bihni is one of Basel's true gems, without which it is no longer possible to imagine the city. Like the Rhine, the famous Basel Läckerli spiced biscuits or the Fasnacht carnival, it is one of those things that provides the city with a certain je ne sais quoi. The theatre group consists of around 100 volunteers who not only provide the actors and actresses on the stage, they also build the sets, operate the technical equipment and otherwise take care of the general running of the theatre.
This well-loved family theatre has to this day not been paralleled anywhere in the world. The entire cast is made up of children. Dedicated and enthusiastic, the young actors and actresses present to their audience both well-known and less familiar stories, tales and yarns.
In the heart of Basel Old Town, directly beside the cathedral on Münsterplatz, you will find Basel's famous Puppet Theatre. The richly diversified programme includes various forms of performance and types of puppet, with a varied repertoire and the occasional guest appearance.
The Helmut Förnbacher Theater Company is one of the oldest, non-subsidised theatre troupes in Switzerland. It was founded in 1980 in Basel's Elisabethenkirche church by actor and stage director Helmut Förnbacher. The company found a permanent home in the Förnbacher Theater, located in the former customs house in Basel's Badischer Bahnhof and has been entertaining its audience at this venue for the last fourteen years. From September to June the theatre company performs hilarious comedies, touching classics, strong contemporary pieces and musicals with a varied, ever-changing programme.
