Gastronomy and shopping

Basel is a cultural city for lovers of fine wining and dining. The city's unique location on the border of three neighbouring countries has had a profound influence on its cuisine. But it is not only in the area of food where the inhabitants of Basel can enjoy the finer things in life - the city also has a wealth of shopping opportunities on offer!

For lovers of fine wining and dining the city has long since lost its status as a hidden gem. The city has more than 20 restaurants with entries in either the Gault Milau or Michelin guides. No less astonishing is the fact that there is so much variety - a fact that is not widely advertised.

The variety is also evident when it comes to shopping, with luxurious labels such as Hermès or Louis Vuitton and shops selling fine shoes, fashion items, books or other specialities, from small boutiques to large department stores - in Basel you will find everything your heart desires.

  • A city for gourmands

Regardless of whether you fancy a gourmet feast, a hearty, traditional meal or exotic specialities, you will find it in Basel. For Sunday morning breakfast why not try the Restaurant Brasserie des Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois. Trendy hotspot Acqua is the place to find a hearty lunch, with a choice of menu items for both vegetarians and meat-eaters. A good choice to relax in the evenings is the sedate piano bar at the Café des Arts.

  • Night life in Basel

Basel also has plenty to offer night owls. Whether you want to spend a cosy evening in the pub, try out a few cocktails in a trendy bar or dance the night away in a club, Basel has something for everybody. A night touring the pubs in the multicultural Kleinbasel quarter of the city is an event that should be on the programme of all visitors to the city.

  • Markets

If it doesn't have to be new but must be special, you'll find it on the flea market at Petersplatz. Take some time to browse the many stalls and you may just uncover a real bargain! The weekday market on Marktplatz is also special. From Monday to Saturday you will find fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy produce and much more local produce from Basel and the surrounding area.

  • Basel labels

Basel has its own ideas when it comes to fashion. For example, over a decade ago the city witnessed the birth of the label “Erfolg”, which produces wearable everyday clothing for young and old. The city on the Rhine also has a lively young designer scene, who put their creativity and flair to good use to the benefit of the fashion-conscious young people of the city.

  • Freie Strasse and Spalenberg

The Frei Strasse is the main shopping street in the city and is where you will find all the international labels and most exquisite boutiques. The shops on nearby Spalenberg are somewhat smaller, however have a charm of their own and a loyal clientèle. The traditional shop Johann Wanner delivers to the Vatican, the White House and even the Queen of England.
