Special Exhibition: "Picasso"

A special relationship exists between the artist, who influenced modern art with his diverse and extensive works, and the city of Basel. The current exhibition makes this relationship very tangible.^From 17 March to 21 July 2013, the Kunstmuseum Basel is exhibiting an extensive retrospective compiled from Basel collections. High-calibre Picasso works from the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Fondation Beyeler will be displayed together for the first time. Concurrently, works from Swiss private collections will be shown – some of them for the first time publicly – and they complement the museum works perfectly. A film and photographic documentation also portrays the legendary ‘Picasso Year’ of 1967, during which the people of Basel voted in a referendum to purchase the two paintings ‘The Two Brothers’ and ‘Seated harlequin’ for the Kunstmuseum Basel. The artist was so moved by this declaration of love that he presented the city with three additional paintings and a famous study.
