The Ethnological Museum in Basel is the largest in Switzerland. It houses one of Europe’s grandest collections on European and non-European cultural life. The museum’s holdings on the South Seas, Ancient America, Tibet and Bali are world-famous, as are its textiles.
At present only the current special show and the permanent exhibition on the Basel Carnival are open to the public. The other permanent exhibitions have been cleared and remain closed during the period of extension work. When the newly designed and extended Museum der Kulturen Basel reopens in 2011, the visitor will again be able to encounter and admire the exhibits from the marvellous collections. An information room gives visitors the latest news of the current building and conversion project at the Museum der Kulturen.
