Christmas in Basel, home of Switzerland's largest Christmas market
The Basel Christmas market at Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz is considered to be one of the prettiest and largest in Switzerland. During the run-up to Christmas, many events and spectacular special exhibitions in the city's museums further enrich its cultural scene.
28 November to 23 December 2013
Open daily from 11 am to 8 pm
During Advent, Basel assumes a unique charm. Two romantic Christmas markets are located in the heart of the city centre, nestled among the Christmas decorations adorning the historic Old Town in Barfüsserplatz around the historic Barfüsserkirche and in Münsterplatz right next to the cathedral, which is probably the city's best-known landmark, where a magnificent Christmas tree is decorated by Christmas specialist Johann Wanner.
At both locations, numerous traders and artisans present their wares. Anyone looking for gift ideas will be inspired by the huge array of products and the fairy-tale atmosphere. Plenty of culinary delights are also on offer, be it a cup of mulled wine, waffles, Basel Läckerli biscuits or ever-popular grilled sausages.
Official opening of Christmas in Basel
Christmas in Basel will be officially opened at 6.30 pm on 28 November 2013, when the city's Governing President, Dr Guy Morin, switches on the Christmas lights at Münsterplatz. At the same time, visitors will be able to admire the splendid illuminations adorning the numerous Christmas trees lining the streets of Basel.
