The semi-canton of Basel-Stadt was created in 1833 from the separation of the former region of Basel into the two semi-cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft.

City canton: Due to the differences in size between the city of Basel (around 166,000 inhabitants) and the two municipalities of Riehen and Bettingen (around 21,000 and 1,000 inhabitants respectively), people also refer to a city canton.

The Governing Council is the highest leading and executive authority, i.e. the executive of the canton of Basel-Stadt (and the city of Basel). It is a collegiate authority, made up of seven equally empowered members.
The Great Council forms the Parliament or the Legislature. With its 130 members, the Great Council is responsible for legislation, supervising the administration and the courts.
